What is MMAPE?
MMAPE (Marine Megafauna and Fisheries) is a Research Program, which was founded in October 2018. The main objective of MMAPE is to generate basic and applied knowledge of marine megafauna species, their interactions with fisheries and other activities of anthropic origin, through inter and transdisciplinary research, seeking to contribute both to the implementation and design of management and conservation strategies for these animals, as well as to regional and national social development, through the conservation of these species.
Our Mission and Vision
The MMAPE´s mission is to directly support both the conservation of marine megafauna species, generate human resources (students and professionals), as well as to assist in the development of coastal communities that depend on the sea for their survival and that directly or indirectly have interactions with different species. To achieve this, we have set ourselves the goal of carrying out inter and transdisciplinary work, while collaborating closely with different social actors, including the fishing, the tourism, the academic, the government sectors also the conservation sector. This is because we believe that to achieve the conservation of marine megafauna species and their habitats, it is necessary to generate both basic and applied scientific knowledge, as well as the identification and mitigation of the interactions of marine megafauna species with activities. at different levels of scales, in order to achieve both the correct incorporation of said knowledge in decision-making related to the design of management and conservation plans, as well as in the implementation of public policies necessary to achieve the sustainable development of biological resources.
